Dear Friends,
This Sunday from noon until 5pm come and work/play at Future Farm, 206
NE Sacramento.
Snacks, tools and good company will be provided and when you get tired
of working you can pet a goat or hold a baby duck.
The weatherman says there is a 20% chance of rain but he tends to be a
little ironic, so dress accordingly.
Can’t wait to see you!
Thanks,
Seth, Kenya & Justin -
One of our adult ducks, Mayday Cardoon, was killed by a bald eagle a few days ago. This time feels different than the deaths of the two ducks we lost to raccoons. We are sad, but it’s hard to be angry at a bald eagle. If nothing else, I am pretty sure that this is the most patriotic way to die.
Fig, May’s bestie, has been pretty freaked out, she wont stop yelling and Cinco (the turkey) keeps attacking her. Poor Fig.
Also, I never would have thought that Cinco would out live May.
RIP Mayday Cardoon.

Yesterday, Justin and I made the mistake of going into a feed store to look at all the new baby chicks. Needless to say we came home with two tiny brown runner ducklings. Due to the fact that we prefer our animals to be people friendly, we handle them as much as possible when they are young. In the case of ducks and turkeys we keep them in our pockets, scarves, sleeves and hoods as much as possible until they have imprinted on us, then we re-introduce them to the flock. So, for the past 36 hours Justin and I have been duck moms, keeping them separate but holding them close and for the most part these two little ducks have been warm, sleepy and content. The times when they are not content mainly occur after we have put them in the box to poop, eat or play in the water. They are fine for a short time (under a minute) and then they start to panic. The shrill sound they make is unbearable and they will keep making it until they see a human face or hear a voice they recognize. I had hoped that they might comfort each other in these moments, but no, it’s like they don’t even see one another. Last night I gave in after about five minutes of chirp-screaming and put a towel over my pillow so that they could be close to me. It worked for the most part but it was messy. Tonight I decided to find a picture of a person and try to put it in the box with them, hoping that would remedy their panic. I leafed through an old national geographic looking for a face, any face, and I scored big time. A giant close up of Jane Goodall.
At first the picture scared the shit out of the ducks, but within a few minutes they were snuggled up and fast asleep.
Even baby ducks know that nobody loves animals more than Jane Goodall.
